I just noticed I have a good amount of coralline algae growing in my skimmer cup. Maybe a common thing, but I don't have any light in the cabinet. Anyone else experience this?
With skimmate still in the cup

Emptied and easier to see.

Happy New Year all! Even you Sisterlemonpot - I'm sure the trolling will continue into 2022.

I feel that you're not being entirely truthful. Let's dissect this for a moment.

Either you've single handedly discovered a new type of corallinales that grows in benthic areas, or you have light shining on your skimmer.

Either you stumbled onto the greatest discovery in the reefing community, or you're not in tune with your system.

Either you're tanks genetic make up is so far advanced than any other tank of the face of the earth, or you just don't have a clue.

Either the laws of science cease to exist in your tank, or you failed to tell us that light shines on your skimmer.

I'll let the readers draw their own conclusion...

You're slacking, it took you until the next day to start the 2022 trolling.
I'll go with this one - Either you're tanks genetic make up is so far advanced than any other tank of the face of the earth

I was hoping some one would be helpful instead of trying to poke holes in this scientific breakthrough. Next time you're here I can scrape some off for you and you can see if you can replicate in your skimmer (doubtful). That is if you even have a tank. I did a lot of research on this and couldn't find any reliable data to back up this happening anywhere else. Seems like I have cultivated a new advanced coralline algae that likes to live in a nasty skimmer.

It looks like that it is on one side of your skimmer cup.. Is that the side that the foam stacks on when it inters the cup? And would settle out because it is heavier than the crud from the foam on that side before it has a chance to level out across the cup bottom.
The coralline algae travels through the tanks as spores ( or small pieces)so if you have a lot in your tank the skimmer would remove it and when it settles out it would “ stick” where it landed. Doesn’t mean it is growing just seems that way.

My two cents…
