Hi folks. This is TIffanie in Chandler. I have been out of the hobby for about 11 years but I just accidentally set up a new 15 gallon tank. Oops, don't know how that happened! The plan is to keep it real simple/low tech, but we all know how that goes.

Can you just not buy actual live rock anywhere here anymore? I was kind of surprised making my way through the LFS circuit. I wanted to cycle the tank with rock and get all the weird mystery growth and oddities that come with it.

I enjoy macro photography, when my system is ready I love to trade photos for frags. Hope to meet some of you soon! (and meet up some of the old farts still around from reefcentral days?)

They have it by the lb at aquarium arts
Only "Life Rock" not live rock. Maybe it is just me, but for a small tank that life rock is ugly. Maybe in a big aquascape it really works.
I am all about sustainability and reef preservation so I get it.

It is man made caribsea pukani rock, that is in their sumps so it is live.
If you are looking for cycled ocean rock they sell it at discount aquarium in tempe

Yeah, the caribsea stuff is all they had anywhere I have been so far. It is just too blobulous/chunky for a little tank. I will check out Discount Aquarium. Thanks!

be careful of the so-called live rock, some of these places have issues and lots of bad hitchhikers. I know of one place that is having hard time keeping fish alive cause a problem they got with a shipment of fish... I haven't purchased any fish from locals for at least 9 months. I can't chance getting all the fish in my 300 sick...I am starting business relationships with importers, hopefully can get stuff soon... Sal

Have any luck.
Sorry I missed your message. Discount did have a lot of live rock. I am sure they buy and sell from local keepers because several pieces had bits of epoxy putty still stuck to them. I didn't get the biodiversity of fresh ocean rock, but I picked up a few really perfect looking pieces. Price was great. Thanks for the tip!

On the down side, I bought 10 tetras there for a freshwater planted tank and they all died from ich.

Hitchhikers are the best part of live rock to me! I got a pistol shrimp once. I also found a really big gnarly looking flatworm. (like 3in long big)
I had a piece of really cool purple sponge that grew like a cap coral. Wonder if anyone in the valley still has any of it?

If I had a bigger tank, I would have considered ordering from Tampa Bay Saltwater. I was also too impatient to wait for cooler weather.
