Hey everyone,

I'm Michael, and I hail from Chandler (I just moved here three months ago, move #22). I don't know many people in the state, so I thought, "I'm going to raise cuttlefish." Then I started looking at eggs, etc. and bought a tank. Then I decided, "Nah, fish and other things are cooler for now." Well, a few months later, and I've got a nice little 50G Waterbox AIO setup (or at least on the path to) going.

I keep track of my on this spreadsheet, and I've put a few videos of my tank below. Paul is my Cowfish and main man, but I'll come up with names for the rest of the crew...eventually. I will admit I've moved rapidly, and I'm making sure I'm catching up on things like dosing, but now I want to move into better understanding how to fine-tune things like parameters and other eccentricities. I've also got a tank build thread going here, too.

Full disclosure, I joined R2R recently so I'm pulling from those, but I just learned about the recent petitions (which affect me directly, so I'm outta there soon) - so sorry for the duplicates. That said, since this is AZ-focused, I'm looking forward to meeting people in person and getting to know locals way more.

Welcome Michael! Glad to have you as part of the group!

This forum was built for those exact same reasons. As a group, AZ FRAG wants no association with R2R and their decisions. We’ve got a great local community here, and everyone is welcome.

HI Mike,,,,
Welcome..... I am in Chandler also....
In the process of building a 300 gallon Reef... to replace the current 140 gallon we have. Put the order in for the tank in Nov, got it in Dec 2020.
It has been a slow build because of all the research we are doing, things to buy and life's sidetracks issue...

Welcome to Chandler! I'm also in Chandler myself (new reefer here). Really like your spreadsheet, and might do something similar for myself! Have you checked out Kona Reef Chandler yet? I'm heading there this weekend, really great shop!

Oh my gosh, I didn't get any email notifications until today!! Thank you so much for the welcome and yes, I agree 100%, it sucks that it's still an issue in 2021...

I have, went two weeks ago for the first time and it was amazing! I'm actually going tomorrow if you want to meet up? My fiance is flying in and I'm finishing off the list of the remaining aquarium stores

Sure! I'm doing some price comparisons what they have vs BRS (bringing my spreadsheets too). I'm free all day and it's only 15 minutes from me

Sure thing, I'll pass you my number in the PM chat we have.

Believe it or not...everything is priced competitively - did some comparisons when I was there - pretty surprised to be honest.

The 140 is going to be broken down and sold in part or as whole package, acrylic tank 72x22x20 tall, stand, lights, pump and sump.
The 300 will be seeded with media from the 140 sump to fast track the 300 cycle.
The 140 has sps.lps and lots of zoa's . I drove to Florida in Nov 2020 and brought back corals from World Wide Corals.
I have a few Bali green slimmer frags growing from the Mother Coral I also have in the 140. Will sell them soon,
Off the top of my head...Fish wise, 4" purple and 3" yellow tangs, 8 clowns, 6 anthias, mandarin, scooter blenny, black blenny, six line wrasse, tabacco bass, 3 cardinals, orchid dotty back, royal gramma and a azure damsel...

For what it’s worth, in my experience, Kona is very competitive with their fish prices. Not so much with their coral frag prices. They do however get some really nice larger pieces in. Their stores are very clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

I’m glad to see a few more east valley guys! Glad to have you all as part of this group!

Yeah I was shocked with how competitive Kona was for supplies and fish. Big pieces definitely caught my eye haha, especially the clams, but I'll definitely go back. So far I've been to the following + plan to go to the rest this weekend:

So far I've been to:
  1. Artistic Aquariums - Right down the street
  2. Kona Reef Chandler
  3. Discount Aquarium Fish and Reef - Would not go back
  4. Reef Monsters - Far as hell but pretty good selection
  5. Aquarium Arts - Wouldn't go back either
  6. The Ocean Floor - Cool that it's in a roller rink, not a lot of SW though
Where I'm going this weekend:
  1. Kona Chandler - Fiance hasn't been either
  2. Limited Edition Corals Aquarium
  3. Aquarium Dynamics
  4. Kona Reef Phoenix
  5. Southwest Seas

WWC was pretty cool. They knew I was coming and I got to spend over 3 hours with staff, got a tour of the entire place, all the equipment they use , I was able to ask questions and they gave me a lot of info to help with my success here at home....
Totally changed my mind on things like now I will have 4 Radion Gen5 XR30 blues on the 300, which i bought before the price increase !
And also changed my mind on how to dose and manage the 140 and soon the 300.
I designed and made the two sumps, and two stage refug idea for the 300 as seen in the pic.
Got to go, cut down a pool fence for a friend in Chandler

Amazing! We'll have to catch up on this. I want to apply part-time to Kona just to learn aquaculture haha
