Hello all,

I just added a new addition to the tank and I’m looking for any best practices or tips for clam care. In the past I have attempted to house a maxima but was unsuccessful. This time around I went the derasa route since they are typically hardier.

water parameters: alk 8.8 cal: 440 nitrate: 0 phos: 0 ph: 8.1
gen 4 radion pro @ 70%
biocube 29
target/suspension feeding with phyto-green-m

Thanks guys and gals

I have a love/hate relationship with clams. I also keep a Marginalis butterfly these days, so I don't even dare try a clam.

In any regard, the clam I kept the longest (a couple years) was a teardrop maxima. I had it 2 feet deep, under 250W metal halides. I lost it when I tried to add another clam, and it certainly brought in some pathogen which first took out the new clam and then moved to the old clam. :(

Beyond that, I've tried a fair number of maxima and crocea over the years, and it was always a challenge to keep them longer than a year. Clearly I was missing something, but something about that one maxima was smooth sailing. I've never tried a derasa.

I feel that you're already doing the right things to better your chances of success. Parameters look good, and the phyto won't hurt.

Ya I love the look of having a nice healthy clam in the tank. Mine is about 1 1/2'' in size so I know this is the crucial period of survival. I've read that once they get around the 3" size that you are pretty much in the clear (as far as target feeding is concerned). It is just hard to know if you're doing everything right as they don't really give any signs of dying until it is too late. So far it seems happy. It has not moved at all since I got it. It has great extension and reacts to light if I wave my hand over it. I will post again in a few days with a update.

Thanks for responding @evolved I know there are a ton of clam forums but just wanted to share with the FRAG fam and help bring some attention to the new sweet forum you guys made for us.
